Gradually over time, the Romans began to settle in territory originally dominated by the Etruscans. From that developed in 194 B.C. the Roman colony "Salernum".
At the end of the 5th century, the city fell into the hands of the Goths and later on the Byzantines from the East. The castle on the Bonadies Hill dates from this time. In the middle of the 7th century, Salerno was taken by the Langobards (= Lombards ) and the castle carries to this day the name of their sovereign, Arechi II.
In 1077 the Normans under Robert Guiscard took control over the city, which led to a rebirth of economic and social development for the city. It was indeed under Norman rule that the first and most important schools of the Middle Ages were established in Salerno, teaching chemistry, alchemy and medicine. Even though the University of Salerno officially came into being only in 1970, it is acknowledged as having created the very first medical faculty in Europe, allowing women to study there as well. Under Robert Guiscard in 1080 the  cathedral,  (2)  was built. In 1194, Henry IV destroyed then rebuilt the city.

Today Salerno has approximately 150 000 inhabitants, most of whom work in tourism, agriculture and commerce. Salerno and surrounding areas are home to ceramic and associated industries, textiles, metallurgy and mechanical engineering. In addition, there is a  working harbour,  (2) and a  marina. Last but not least, Salerno is the capital of the surrounding province of the same name and hosts an episcopate.
