Amalfi

Amalfi was founded by the Romans in the 4th century A.D. From 939 to 1131 the city had its heyday as an independent and influential maritime republic till it was sacked by forces from Pisa. Today Amalfi is a well-known tourist place visited by many. Among the places of most interest are the fascinating  lanes and corridors, (2), (3)  dating from the Middle Ages, Saint Andrew's Cathedral  with its large outside staircase, cloister and museum and also the Grotta dello Smeraldo or Emerald Cave.

A short walking trip (approx. 2 hours) takes in the ancient paper factories in the Valle dei Mulini (Valley of the Mills). Starting from Cathedral Square taking Capuano Street, you arrive at Largo Marini. From there, proceed along the left side of the valley, Valle del Canneto, which brings you to the paper factories. While there, visit the Paper Museum  Museo della carta  (www.museodellacarta.it).

Another very beautiful excursion, leaving from Amalfi, can be taken by bus to the fascinating little town of Scala e Ravello, situated high above Amalfi. Here you can visit two splendid villas: the Villa Rufolo and the Villa Cimbrone. They are accessible via the bus route to neighbouring Ravello. To return to Amalfi or to Atrani, you can go on foot down a path which traverses some very beautiful gardens and orchards. On occasion you will need to leave the pedestrian path to travel along the main roads.

Ravello

Ravello was founded by Roman colonisers, like Amalfi, in the 4th century BC. They would have felt safe there, 300 metres above sea level. Ravello was also part of the Amalfi Republic until 1081 and profitted from the Republic's boom times. In these years Amalfi was occupied by the Normans under Robert Guiscard. Ravello wasn't happy with this outcome and rebelled against Amalfi by electing their own Doge, thus betraying Guiscard. The present name Ravello comes from the word "rebel", harking back to that rebellion. The parting of the ways was sealed by the Pope in 1096 and as a result Ravello became a bishopric, until 1603.

One of today's attractions of Ravello is the splendid Villa Rufolo, which Nicola Rufolo, a very rich citizen of the town, had constructed in 1270 on a rocky outcrop. Because of its unique position, Ravello was developed in the 19th century with aristocratic travellers in mind. One of those, in 1880, was Richard Wagner and in honour of Wagner, the  Ravello festival  was inaugurated in 1953. It takes place in the gardens of Villa Rufolo in the first weeks of July every year.
