Caserta is the capital of the agriculturally shaped province of the same name. It was founded in the 9th century. During World War II the headquarters of the allied armed forces in the Mediterranean were located in Caserta. Today there are approximately 70,000 inhabitants in the city, which owes its upswing to the fact that Charles III. of Bourbon, king of Naples and Sicily, preferred to reside here rather than in Naples. The enormous royal palace
"Reggia" was built from 1752 to 1772. It was designed after the model of Versailles. Many refugees from the french revolution came here. With 1200 rooms, 1900 windows and 34 staircases this complex probably offered
sufficient place.
Since 1997 the Royal Palace at Caserta with the Park, the Aqueduct of Vanvitelli and the San Leucio Complex are recognized as a World Heritage Site. Of course the Reggia is a 1st rate tourist attraction.
The ample park of the palace with its beautiful fountains and the
"English Garden" is also very worth seeing. The park offers the opportunity of long walks. And it is so extended that there is a regular bus operating.
