Sorrento was founded around the 7th Century B.C. by the Phonecians. By the 5th century B.C, the area came under Greek rule.
Its current name is derived from the sirens of the Odyssey.
The Greeks utilised Sorrentos position as a port, establishing trade routes with other European cities such as Athens and Marseille.
Like many places nearby, Sorrento was taken over by the Samnites after only 150 years of Greek rule.
Finally the Romans seized control of Sorrento.
They recognized its qualities as a tourist resort.
Many rich and noble Romans set up their summer residences here.
The Roman emperor Augustus established here - as well as on Capri - several villas.
However up to the 19th century Sorrento could be reached only by ship.
By building new roads, tourism obtained its paramount economic importance for Sorrento.
Today with over 12,000 beds, Sorrento is probably the most visited tourist resort in Southern Italy.
As with the Romans, fruit growing is still prevalent in the nearby surrounding areas,
with many plantations of lemons, oranges and more recently kiwifruit.
You can easily enjoy Sorrento without a car.
Capri, Ischia and Naples can be reached from Sorrento easily by ferry.
With the Circumvesuviana, which does not belong to the FS (Ferrovia Statale),
one can travel quickly and cheaply to Naples (main station), Pompeii and Ercolano.
In addition there are bus lines for Positano and Amalfi.
However if you are looking for beautiful sandy beaches to sunbathe,
the Gulf of Salerno is probably the better option and no more than ninety minutes away....
